Christmas Tree Box
The country-styled tree card holder is made of five easy pieces cut out of one-inch-thick pine boards (the tree, two sides, a front and bottom) (figure A). Cut the straight pieces with a miter saw and use a jigsaw for the tree. Sand the pieces and remove the dust with a tack cloth or damp rag. Paint as desired, and then sand the edges once dry for a distressed look. Attach the pieces with finish nails, letting the nail heads show to fit with the rustic look. Drill tiny pilot holes in the top of the tree and the star (a purchased cutout) and secure it with 16-gauge twisted wire using hot glue.
Get help from the kids to make this felt banner by gluing the pieces in place (reinforce the areas that will take stress from the cards like the stocking and tabs by sewing them in place). Hang it on a painted dowel or drapery rod.
