Make any unfrosted dark-colored cake more festive using craft stencils and powdered sugar. If you don't own a stencil, you can make your own. Just cut a basic shape out of card stock or a file folder to fashion the stencil.
Place the stencil on an unfrosted cake and sprinkle powdered sugar in the cutaway area. This works great with paper lace doilies, too.
Want to dress up a frosted cake? Use the same technique but instead of powdered sugar, dust the stencil with sprinkles, edible glitter or cocoa powder. This trick is ideal for cupcakes, too, and kids love to help with this project.
