Alternative Uses for Microwaves and Slow Cookers

TIPical Mary Ellen host Mary Ellen Pinkham shares some of her favorite tips for using microwaves and slow cookers.

  • Roast garlic in the microwave. Cut off the top of the garlic bulb. Season with salt, pepper and olive oil. Place in a bowl with a small amount of water, cover with plastic wrap (figure A), and microwave for eight minutes.

  • Disinfect sponges and toothbrushes by placing them in the microwave for 30 seconds. Cutting boards can also be disinfected by placing them into the microwave for one minute.

  • Melt batches of chocolate or almond bark for dipping fruit and other goodies by placing in a slow cooker on low (figure B). Stir occasionally.

  • If you are low on oven space place baking potatoes wrapped in foil in a slow cooker (figure C)set on high. Cook for about three hours or until soft.

  • Make your own liquid potpourri. Turn your slow cooker on low, fill bottom with grape seed, canola or safflower oil and a few drops of essential oil.
