Catalina Island
At one time, Catalina Island was home to Russian trappers, pirates, gold miners and bootleggers, but in 1919, its life as an island of ill repute ended. Chewing gum magnate, William Wrigley Jr. purchased a controlling interest in the island and transformed it into a first-class tourist destination.

Most of the island is rugged and sparsely populated, except for the city of Avalon, the only real town on the island and a popular vacation spot. Visitors flock here to experience an old-fashioned beach community, complete with boardwalk, sandy beach and charming homes that dot the landscape.
