Recycled Plant Containers
Insider's Garden : Episode TIG-109 -- More Projects »
Walls provide a wonderfully neutral backdrop for hanging plants--and their pots. Look for unusual containers at your local antique stores and flea markets. Ki Massauer and Sue Whitney, owners of the Junk Store in Long Lake, Minnesota, recycle almost anything into wall art. They are especially known for their creative "re-purposing" of unusual objects into planters. Some of their more interesting success stories include:
Chicken feeder (figure B) Old garden fencing was attached to a chicken feeder with flexible wiring so that it is visible above the lip of the feeder. Fresh flowers can be added to a planting of ivy by using floral tubes. The flowers can be changed seasonally.
Exit sign (figure C) An old exit sign was turned upside down and turned into a terrarium. The glass front panel creates the perfect environment for moisture-loving plants.
Hanging boots (figure D) Two old rubber boots are attached to hanging clips. A terra-cotta pot full of Cuban oregano and coleus was placed in each boot, and grapevine was draped between the boots to conceal the clips.
Old wheels (figure E)Large old metal wheels make wonderful holders for multiple plants. Terra-cotta pots can first be embellished with interesting additions (figure F), and then attached to the spokes of the wheel with flexible wire. An old door, corner block, a large bolt and some elbow grease are all you need for the transformation. Attach the corner block to the door, and then bolt the wheel to the corner block. Arrange pots of plants around the wheel.
Note: Before you hang your plants, you might want to prepare your walls for the moisture by first protecting them with a water-resistant sealer.
