English Color Bowl

Florist Mark Held demonstrates how to assemble an English garden color bowl (figure A).

Materials:

dark wicker basket
hot glue gun and glue sticks
moss
floral foil or heavy duty plastic
scissors
soil
curly willow
ivy
hydrangea
azaleas
cyclamen

  1. Use a hot glue gun to adhere sections of green moss to the handles of the basket, and wrap curly willow around the handle of the basket (figure B).
  2. Line the bottom of the basket with floral foil or heavy duty plastic (figure C).
  3. Fill the basket with potting soil and remove the azaleas, hydrangea, and cyclamen from their pots. Position the plants in the basket, working from the center out towards the sides. Place two ivy plants in the basket on both the left and right sides near the base of the handles.
  4. Weave some of the ivy limbs around and through the basket's handle (figure D), and allow for a few of the tendrils to hang over the edge of the basket.
  5. Test the soil with your finger to check if it is dry and requires watering. Since the container has no drainage holes, be careful not to overwater the plants. After a couple of weeks, plant the arrangement outside in the garden.
