For the Love of ChocolateRobert Steinberg grew up and spent most of his life in Massachusetts, including medical school, until his residency took him to San Francisco. After he established a solo practice, he fell ill with lymphoma. He eventually decided to find someone to take over his practice. He didn't know what he was going to do next but was interested about a number of things, including food. He began to learn more about food and got to know many people in the industry. A friend turned him on to the world of chocolate, and things were forever changed for him. After an internship of sorts at a chocolate-making operation in France, he came up with a plan to become a chocolatier and make chocolate the European way. He knew he would need help creating his chocolate factory, so he called upon his friend John Scharffenberger, who started a company that made sparkling wines. They became partners, and the company took off from there. Now that his cancer is in remission, he donates some of his time to seeing patients at a free clinic several days a month. To him the good life is doing something pleasurable on a daily basis, and feels he has found that with his chocolate-making company.
