NassauIn this episode we visit four gardens in Nassau, the capital city of the Bahamas: Ocean Club gardens is an elegant classical garden hidden behind an old posh resort. Designed in hand-laid rock, the garden also displays European sculptures inspired by the city of Versailles in France. In one area, an immense cloister from the 13th century was put together piece by piece. The Lacethorpe garden sits on a bluff a few miles from downtown Nassau. Its enchanting lagoon-like pool was seen in the James Bond movie,
Never Say Never Again. Amid spiky bromeliads and coconut palms, a unique tree produces chicle, which is used to make chewing gum. The Retreat Garden is a private garden with a collection of more than 170 varieties of exotic palms, including the rare Cuban belly palm and the unique Zombie palms with their colorful and prickly leaves. There is also an interesting African shaving tree, which has pink bushy flowers similar to a shaving brush. Marathon Garden is a private garden located at the end of a country road. Artist Barbara Pyfrom designed a sculpture garden that features pieces like "The Green Lady" who watches over the garden and "The Mermaid" who swims by the pond.
