Episode SGO-408

Portland
In this episode, we visit four gardens in Portland, Maine. The first garden is hidden behind the historic home of one of America's greatest poets, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Dense hostas line a brick walk in this oasis in the middle of the city. The garden was redesigned in the 1920s, but many plantings are from Longfellow's time. Michal Graber's garden is an English-style garden found on rolling hillsides. A historic barn hovers over the property where virtually nothing existed 40 years ago. A Japanese garden is hidden in the woods. Hamilton House is located on the banks of the Salmon Falls River and is home to three acres of historic gardens. Emily and Elise Tyson designed the gardens in the early 1900s after their travels to Europe. A sunken and cottage garden are special features. Rob and Annette Elowitch's Garden is located on a city lot that is home to two art dealers. Their dog Buzz takes an active role in the gardening process. A Japanese garden has a small water feature as well as wind chimes.
