Machine quilting requires keeping your sewing machine in top working condition. Expert Alex Anderson gives these tips:

  • Check your manufacturer's recommendations for cleaning and oiling your machine.
  • Sewing machine oil should be clear. If the oil in your bottle has turned brown, throw it out. The discoloration means the oil has turned rancid.
  • After oiling your machine, run a scrap of fabric through machine four or five times to make sure there is no residue left on the machine.
  • If you do get oil residue on your quilt, sprinkle the spot with cornstarch and brush with a soft toothbrush. Let starch sit overnight for full effect.
