"Mosaic Plate" Place Mat

Materials:

plates to photocopy
inkjet transfer paper
tracing paper
glue stick
white muslin fabric
place mats or tablecloths cut into sections
quilting notions

Steps:

  1. Take digital photos of plates or scan images. Print the digitized images onto inkjet transfer paper (figure A) using a computer printer.

  2. Cut the paper 'plate' copy into pieces.

  • Glue the plate pieces onto tracing paper with a glue stick (figure B).
  • PHOTO

  • Iron plate pieces onto white muslin fabric (figure C) and cut the plate design out of the muslin.

  • Use the needle-turn method of applique to the stitch the plate onto the place mat (tablecloth, etc.) fabric.

  • Decorate the place mat as desired (figure D).

  • Attach borders, batting and binding to complete the project.

    Place mats can be washed, however, each time quilts are washed it will be necessary to re-block them (see instructions below). Heat can remove the transferred image so don't iron them.

    Quilt blocking technique
    The blocking process flattens and squares quilts to create a perfectly shaped quilt with straight, even quilt edges.


    • Place the quilt on a pressed board, grid board or carpet to pin.

  • Pin the centers of quilt and pull tautly, pin the remainder of the edges into a desired square shape (figure E).

  • Use rulers to square up the quilt (figure F) if not using a grid board.

  • Spray with water, soaking the quilt thoroughly.

  • Remove the pins one-by-one, pull again to flatten, then pin once more. The quilt will take the shape of the position formed by the pin placement as it dries.
  • Let set at least 24 hours.
