Nine years ago Shelly Suzuki bought a large house to share with her parents. Their home is close to the ocean with plenty of room for everyone, but Shelly and her mother Shizue have always felt that something was missing in the front yard. They want to soften the appearance of the house and hardscape, fill their planter boxes with colorful flowers, rework the lighting for the steps and the house, and bring the side area into balance with the rest of the yard. With a budget of $25,000, the Suzukis would like their front yard to become the welcoming entry the home deserves.Suzuki and her mother Shizue feel that their plain front yard is dwarfed by the size of their house. They would like a landscape that will make the neighbors sit up and take notice.
Landscaper designer Barbara Paul presents a plan that ties the house and yard together through the use of shape and color. Elena Fortunato's design would add stateliness to the landscape by playing up the central staircase. Pamela Homfelt proposes a formal plan with large planting beds.
Suzuki and her mother decide on Fortunato's design, and they're delighted with the way the harsh look of red brick with sparse landscaping is transformed to the softer look of stone teamed with new plant materials. Fortunato has created a front yard as welcoming and dramatic as the Suzukis' grand home.
