How's That Work?

Food Smoker, CD Burner, Wood Chipper
Smoking food was born out of necessity thousands of years ago, when men smoked perishable foods such as meat and fish to keep them from spoiling. Today people smoke food mostly for the distinct smoky and aromatic taste. Although some still insist on using traditional smokehouses, contemporary smokers have made the art of smoking food easier and more accessible for the modern cook. Next, in 1982, the compact disc, better known as the CD, revolutionized music. It was nearly perfect, except for one limitation--you couldn't record with it. Manufacturers immediately saw the potential for such a device and got to work. The first CD recorders came out for professionals in 1988, but they worked slowly, weighed more than 600 pounds and costing more than $100,000! Finally, Charles W. Keith invented the great grandfather of the wood chipper back in 1927. This machine was simply called "a cutter." It was used to grind plants such as hay, alfalfa and straw into feed for livestock. As interest in lawn and garden care flourished in the 1950s, uses for similar grinding machines expanded, but it wasn't until three decades later that wood chippers like those we know today came into their own.
