Electric Juicer, Paper Shredder, Car AirbagsThough it may be hard to imagine, drinking juice as we do now was uncommon until the 20th century. The juice from oranges, grapefruits and lemons were extracted with something called a reamer--usually made of glass, china or aluminum. In 1961 centrifuge juicers took on a whole new spin. Instead of just squeezing the pulp, the electric juicer chopped your favorite fruits and veggies with a series of razor sharp blades. Next, the paper shredder started its wave of destruction in 1898. That's when an Austrian artillery officer needed to find a way to destroy ballistics drawings before they fell into enemy hands. It wasn't until the 1930s when Adolf Ehinger of Germany invented the first commercial paper shredder. Finally, 1986 was the first year airbags became available to drivers in the United States. In that year, German automaker Mercedes-Benz offered these revolutionary safety devices on all their vehicles. By the early 1990s the safety advantages were obvious, and all cars sold in the States were required to have driver-side airbags. By the end of the decade, passenger side airbags also became mandatory.
