Computer Keyboard, Nail Gun, Oscillating Fan
The keyboard has become such a staple part of the computer, it's hard to believe these two didn't always go hand in hand. It wasn't as simple as just connecting a typewriter to a computer. Engineers needed to find a way to convert the mechanical operation of a typewriter into an electronic process for a computer, so tiny electric switches were developed to sit below each key, sending a signal whenever it was pressed. Next, the Industrial Revolution brought with it machines that churned out nails with the greatest of ease. Still it took three quarters of a century and millions of sore thumbs until the hammer was taken out of the equation. Several higher powered designs were created, but the most popular was called the pneumatic nail gun. It used compressed air to drive nails into even the hardest woods. The advantage to builders was obvious and in just a few short years, the pneumatic nail gun has quieted the pounding of hammers on construction sites across the country. Finally, handheld fans have been part of civilization for more than 4,000 years, but it wasn't until the Renaissance that carrying one became a sign of nobility. With the invention of electricity fans soon became much easier to use. Simply by attaching an electric motor to what looked like a boat propeller, these devices were suddenly cooling entire rooms, and making hot days much more bearable.
