How's That Work?
Episode HWW-103

Light Bulb, Digital Camera, Iron
First, in the 1800s, lighting homes meant using candles or gas lamps--which was not only dirty and unhealthy, but it also led to more than a few fires. An elite team of inventors in the 1860s began working for Thomas Edison and shortly thereafter, the light bulb was born. Next, we discuss how digital cameras came to be. Digital pictures have been around longer than most people think. They made their first "impact" in the 1960s, when NASA needed a reliable way to send pictures to earth from probes that landed on the moon. Finally, pressing clothes with a hot metal iron has been around for centuries, but until the late 1800s things were much more complicated. With a clear problem just waiting to be fixed, inventors began to look for ways to incorporate electricity into this pressing matter. Electricity invented steam, and steam turned the iron into one of the most popular household appliances in the 20th century.
