Factor in Flooring Options
Be careful about flooring choices, especially in wet areas like kitchens and bathrooms. Floors in these areas should be highly resistant to moisture penetration and highly durable to heavy traffic. Ceramic and porcelain tile are affordable choices that meet these qualities. Wood floors are not bad choices for the kitchen but they should always be installed correctly and, most importantly, finished with a traffic-friendly polyurethane coat that withstands moisture as well as use and abuse.

For this particular renovation, I would have considered a large scale, stone-look tile—a much better option with the installation time given and the moisture conditions present. If you are pressed for time and money in a kitchen renovation, and love the look of wood flooring, consider pre-finished options that have a factory polyurethane coat already on the material or a wood laminate floor that also is pre-finished.
