Spring in the Clouds
Leaving sea level and the beautiful city of Vancouver, host David Tarrant heads eastward and upward in his chase of spring. He journeys into the Thompson River Valley, past giant ponderosa pines. He crosses rivers on a current-powered ferry and hops a chairlift for an easy ride most of the way up his first mountain. On the way the weather is unpredictable--snow, rain, sunshine, wind. Tarrant is undeterred, however, and a short hike takes him to an alpine meadow filled with chest-high wildflowers. Still, he hasn't gone high enough, so it's off to the extraordinary Wells Gray Park for an all day hike. Reaching the meadows, he's not sure he has the time, the gear or the stamina to continue up to the snowline, but he perseveres and there it is--the moment when spring has just arrived. A tiny anemone peaks out from the snow melt. The plant will bloom for only a brief day or two before winter buries it once more.
