"I purchased my first Bay Area home in September 2000—a 43-foot houseboat! It took a little over a year to refit the interior and upgrade everything, but I moved onboard December 2001. It was fun redoing the interior of the boat with new Berber carpet, new wallpaper and cleaning the 25-year-old boat to sparkling condition. The challenges? Finding furniture that would fit onboard and hold up to the marine environment itself.

The funniest things involved maneuvering in such a limited space, planning storage, being close to nature and the weather. My cat had his own challenges in getting used to the motion of the home, dealing with birds bigger than him, and falling in the water (he turned out to be a terrific swimmer!).
