"I was the last of 10 children to move out. Being the baby girl, I wanted to move close to my parents. The realtor found a home less than 20 minutes from my parents and about 10 minutes from my job! After all of the excitement died down, I realized that I had purchased a home right next door to a huge apartment complex with even more condos behind me. I have no privacy. I also realized that my huge backyard has not turned out to be the dream that I thought it would be. The upkeep is really expensive, so it is overgrown now. There is only one phone jack throughout the entire house. The windows are originals, circa 1939, so it's drafty in the winter and we're constantly getting colds. The countertop in the kitchen seems to be plywood. When we put the microwave on top, we couldn't open the drawers underneath. The linoleum on the floor has started to peel, and the termites are eating us down to the ground. There was no original setup for the dryer, only the washer. This house has really turned out to be a money pit.My advice to any first-time home buyer is to take someone with you to point out all of the pitfalls. Lastly, look around your neighborhood before you purchase. Go by at the beginning of the week, the middle of the week and the weekend, if you can."
