Pet Doors and Metal Gutters
Homeowners Carol Catron and Jana Rubenstein are certain they found their dream home. It’s a quiet seaside cottage with a great view, located on the end of a cul-de-sac. Despite the ideal location, they have some concerns about their home’s long-term exposure to the ocean’s harsh elements. Home inspector Steve Ramos notices that heat is escaping through an open pet door, the exhaust vent for the water heater is touching the wood deck, causing a fire hazard, and the gutters are made of plastic. Steve recommends installing a collar-triggered remote-opening door for the owners’ cat, fitting a metal flue collar to the exhaust vent to prevent fire, and replacing the gutters with sturdier galvanized steel items.
