Daniel Kucan, interior designer and host of Desperate Spaces
Daniel Kucan starting his design career at the age of seven, growing up in a strict theater conservatory in Las Vegas where he studied design, carpentry, art and performance studies. Over the next 11 years, he developed an edgy, dramatic style and quickly became known as an artist who made rules up as he went along. Kucan then attended New York University, where he added a hip, global perspective to his style and embraced the East Village rock-and-roll aesthetic of the downtown crowd.

After graduating from NYU, he moved back to the West Coast and became the lead designer for Hollywood's to-the-trade furnishers, Mortise & Tenon on La Brea, where he can still be found today.

A prolific world traveler, he often gains inspiration from the most obscure sources. This global awareness has instilled in Kucan a tenacious commitment to building in recycled and renewable materials, often resulting in striking compositions of offbeat character.

He currently lives in Los Angeles in a Gothic English cottage of his own restoration. When he's not building things, he can usually be found hiking in the mountains over L.A. with his two smelly hound dogs. Prior to HGTV's Desperate Spaces, Kucan appeared as a designer for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
