Designer's Addiction to Gardening
Garden designer David Bennett McMullin remembers his rural roots by creating a country garden in an urban atmosphere. His house still maintains the feel of the old farmhouse. He uses galvanized steel along arbors and stepping stones throughout the garden. A brick path unifies the various color-theme gardens. Though there are not a large number of flowers, McMullin's use of color and texture in the foliage of plants provides a delight to the eye. Rare longleaf pines dot the property. McMullin likes to help gardeners understand balance through the use of color and design. His garden is divided into manageable sections. A red garden highlighting the canna 'Tropicana' and a yellow garden with spirea are examples using flowers, foliage and color effectively. Tall grasses provide drama in a small garden: Miscanthus giganteus grows 12 feet high.
