Designer Donna Dewberry provides ideas for handpainting a wall border in a little girl's room.
Materials:
household sponge
water-based acrylic paints (white, cream, yellow, green and plum)
canvas (available at art-supply stores)
wallpaper paste
large, flat paintbrush
floating medium (paint gel without pigment)
small and large round paintbrushes
Steps:
- Dampen a household sponge (rounded at the edges with scissors) and dip into white and cream paint. The paint should be pooled so that the cream is on one side and the white on the opposite side.
- Apply paint to canvas in a circular motion (figure A). When the canvas is finished, apply it to the wall with wallpaper paste.
- Once the base coat is dry, double-load (dip one corner in one color of paint and the opposite corner in the other color) a dampened flat paintbrush with green and white paint. Spread the paint on the brush with a few back-and-forth strokes on the palette.
- Dip the white end in a bit of yellow paint and continue to work the brush. Add a touch of floating medium in the process.
- Stand the brush straight up and drag it across the canvas to create a vine (figure B). Wander the brush across the canvas with a long, smooth stroke.
- To paint a leaf, double-load a brush with the same green-white-yellow paints, then stand the brush on end and press down. Give the brush a wiggle as you make a half-heart shape (figure C). Do the same motion on the other side to make a full leaf. Be sure to paint a stem from the vine to the leaf.
- Create daisies with long, slender oval shapes in a circular pattern with white paint (figure D). Double-load a small, round paintbrush with yellow and green to create the center.
- Wisteria is done with a double-loaded large, round brush with white and plum paint that is dabbed in short bursts on the canvas (figure E).
