This technique can also be used to create a rusted look on planters, pots and small accessories.
Materials:

textured wallpaper to paint
wallpaper smoothing brush
brayer
black sating base coat (latex)
paint roller and pan
french brush
sea sponge
terrycloth
spritz bottle and water
tint concentrates: rouge, burnt sienna and raw sienna

Steps:

  1. Apply wallpaper to wall, ceiling or other project according to manufacturer's directions. Make sure it's well adhered by using the brayer at seams. Let dry.
  2. Paint base coat over entire surface (black satin latex). Allow to dry.
  3. Using a sea sponge and/or french brush, begin applying rouge tint concentrate in a random pattern, allowing some of the black background to show through.
  4. Apply burnt sienna in the same manner (again allowing a bit of the previous colors to show through).
  5. Finally, apply raw sienna as above, letting it touch the raised portions of the design mostly as this should be an accent.
