This project can be used as a border around a room, on a piece of unfinished wooden furniture or to bring life to an ordinary bathroom mirror.
Materials:
wooden frame
squeegee
stencil
stencil paste
crackle medium
crackle activator
acrylic paint
glazing medium
sea sponge or rag
Steps:
- Begin by cutting the stencil into smaller pieces to fit the work area. Lay the cut stencil onto the frame and adjust the position.
- Squeegee paste over the stencil. Keep in mind that this doesn't have to be perfectly even.
- Lift the stencil off and add crackle medium to the frame's border. Now allow the frame to dry for about 20 minutes.
- Paint over the crackle medium with any color acrylic paint.
- Add a glaze made from half acrylic paint and half glazing medium to the portion of wood with the raised stencil.
- Use a sea sponge and wipe downward over the stenciled area to create an antique look.
- Paint the trim of the border with crackle activator.
- Paint the mixed glaze again over the stenciled wood, this time using a different color paint. Again wipe downward with a sea sponge or rag.
- Add color to the 3-D stencil by painting the area freehand with acrylic paint that has been slightly watered down (figure A). Don't be afraid to use a wide range of colors, including black.
