Believe it or not, you can use either liquid or powder Rit to dye wood paneling.
Van-Martin Rowe demonstrates two of the finishes he used to age the newer parts of the house:

  • To color the bedroom flooring, he used casein or milk paint. This very thick paint brushes on easily and can be used to give full or partial coverage. After the milk paint is dry, start with coarse sandpaper and sand the finish, trying to mimic the wear you would find on floors after years of use. Sand in one direction only, and use less-coarse sandpaper as you work. When the sanding is complete, protect the surface with two to three coats of a water-based polyurethane. If ease of care isn't of great concern, you may prefer to use a paste wax instead.

  • To dye wood paneling, use either liquid or powder Rit dye (if using powder, follow package instructions to mix the dye). It will be very watery. Apply the dye with a sponge, being careful not to get any on you. If you wish to stain around an area, first delineate the outline with a craft knife or a pencil , bearing down hard enough to gouge the wood and create a small groove that will stop the dye from bleeding into the wood.
