Materials:
TSP (tri-sodium phosphate)
Benjamin Moore #HC-79 satin oil paint -- base color
Benjamin Moore #927 satin oil -- top color
Benjamin Moore oil glazing liquid
2" or 3" brush
mineral spirits
cotton cloth rags
Steps:
- Following the directions on the container, clean the paneling with TSP.
- Apply the base color, making sure to apply it with the grain rather than across the grain. Let dry overnight. Clean the brush in mineral spirits.
- Mix satin oil top color in a 1:1 mix with the glazing liquid.
- Use a brush to apply this mixture to the paneling, one panel at a time. Use a cotton cloth to wipe off any excess glaze from top to bottom. Note: The more glaze left on the panel, the lighter the effect.
- Repeat steps 3 and 4 on each panel.
- Clean the brush with mineral spirits.
Safety Tips:
- Spread out the wet oil- or mineral spirit-soaked cloth in well-ventilated area to dry. Never wad up the wet cloth or toss it into a trash can since doing so can result in spontaneous combustion.
- Use a large glass jar to store mineral spirits, and to clean out the brush. After each cleaning, replace the lid and let the contents settle. The paint solids will sink to the bottom, leaving clean spirits at the top.
- Never pour mineral spirits into a storm drain or down the sink: a gallon of spirits can contaminate a million gallons of ground water.
- To dispose of leftover oil paint, rags and mineral spirits, contact your local waste management agency for locations of hazardous material collection sites.
