Don't get rid of dated paneling! Bring it up to date with Gary Lord's pickling instructions.
Materials:
cleaning, degreasing agent
rags
oil-based paint
paint thinner
1 gallon bucket
stir stick
2" to 4" wide ox-hair brushes
000 steel wool (optional)
cheesecloth (optional)
4" brush (optional)
Steps:
- Clean surface with cleaning, degreasing agent. Remove any wax.
- Mix 1 part oil base paint and 1 part paint thinner into an empty one-gallon bucket and stir.
- Using ox-hair brushes, apply glaze to paneling in two- to three-board area in a thin but even application. Make sure the tongue and groove areas are painted solid. The longer the glaze stays on the paneling, the lighter the boards will be.
- Wipe off glaze with either a rag or a 4" wide brush. You can also use 000 steel wool or cheesecloth to wipe off the glaze.
- After glaze is wiped off the way you wish, lay it off with one last vertical pass using the rag (brush, steel wool or cheesecloth) over the length of the board.
For rough and sawed paneling:
- No cleaning is necessary, follow steps 2-5.
- Allow the glaze to sink into the board. The color will change and usually dry darker as more glaze penetrates into the board.
