TIPical Mary Ellen host Mary Ellen gives tips for using various things around the house to divide up space in a room.

  • Room dividers have various uses. They obviously divide rooms into different sections, but they also provide a new look to a room. In certain cases room dividers act as pieces of art and provide a room with a new textured look. Room dividers can also be set up to hide clutter.

  • Create a photo-display room divider by pasting photos onto a divider (figure A).

  • Make a screen by attaching two sets of louvered folding closet doors with hinges (figure B).

  • Something as simple as a tall bookcase can be a room divider. Choose a bookcase with an open back and fill it with interesting items (figure C).

  • Make a quick room divider with ribbons. Attach ribbons to drapery or shower curtain rings and hang from a curtain rod. Drill hooks into a ceiling and hang the rod from these or from a doorway.

  • Hang sheer fabric or drapes from a doorway or ceiling for a room divider that allows in light (figure D).

  • The screen is the most common room divider. Decorate a plain screen with family photos and memorabilia, or paint the screen to match the decor of your room.

  • Create an optical illusion by hanging vintage mirrors on a screen to expand the optical space in a small room.

  • Many craft stores sell framework kits for screens. Pick up a kit and some fabric and cover a plain screen.

  • Use a fireplace screen as a miniature room divider.
