New Glass Block Wall

Weekend Warriors : Episode WAR-309 -- More Projects »
Eric Pinderski recently bought a new home. He loves everything about it except for one unsightly problem: a large hole in the garage wall. The wall is currently covered with plywood on the inside and a steel cage on the outside. Eric feels it 's an ugly mess, and he's decided to fill the hole by building a glass block wall . With the help of his girlfriend Soukahn, Eric thinks it can be done in just two days.

Eric and Soukahn start the project by removing the plywood sheets and the studs that framed them. The work goes quickly until Eric tries to remove the soleplate , which refuses to budge. Eric keeps at it until the soleplate finally comes loose . With the area cleared and prepped, Eric and Soukahn carefully measure the garage wall opening; then they do a dry fit of two rows of blocks, using plastic spacers to help hold everything together. Pleased with how the dry fit looks, Eric decides to mix a batch of mortar and start laying the blocks in. Eric and Soukahn complete the first row of blocks before deciding to call it a day.

Day two begins with the removal of the steel cage. Soukahn and Eric unbolt it from the wall, but it's too heavy to move by themselves, so Eric's father John comes over to help. Together, the trio manages to slide the heavy cage out of the way. Eric and Soukahn then resume building the wall. As the wall grows higher, the job gets more complicated. The pair has to lay reinforcement wire on top of the rows of blocks to help keep the wall stable. They also attach reinforcement brackets to the wall . The work spills over into a third day, but by the end of that day, the last block finally goes in.

On day four, Eric and Soukahn add a finishing touch to the wall by sanding down and smoothing out the plaster above the top row of blocks. After a coat of paint on the surrounding wall, the glass block wall is done and Eric is pleased with how it turned out. He particularly likes the way it looks like the glass block has always been there.
