Materials:
pre-primed floorcloth canvas (cut to 38" x 62")
2 oz. acrylic paints (4 peach , 1 blue-gray, 1 pale green, 1 dark green, 1 white)
black fine-point permanent marker
acrylic varnish
white or fabric glue
assorted artist brushes
plate or palette
ruler
pencil
scissors
tracing paper on roll
transfer paper or chalk
heavy books
list of relatives' birthdays and wedding dates
painter's tape
Steps:
- Lay canvas right side up on a flat surface. Draft a line one inch in from the edges. Trim off the corners diagonally. Turn the canvas over. Fold in all four edges along the marked lines, mitering the corners. Generously glue in place and weight edge with heavy books. Let dry overnight.
- Using a wide brush, paint the canvas peach. Brush right up to and onto the folded edges. Let dry 30 minutes. Paint additional coats as needed for full coverage.
- Draft a 3-1/2-inch-wide border around the canvas. Paint the border pale green and let dry. Paint a narrow dark green stripe along the inner border to outline and set-off the peach interior.
- Sketch a tree on a 28" x 52" piece of tracing paper. Add limbs and branches as needed to accommodate the family members on your list. Transfer the sketch onto the floorcloth or copy it freehand with chalk.
- On a plate or palette, mix blue-gray and white paint to create light, medium and dark values. Paint the tree trunk, branches and leaves using the lighter value in the interior areas and the medium/darker values toward the edges. Let dry overnight .
- Write family names and dates on the tree using a black fine-point permanent pen (figure A).
- Apply three coats of acrylic varnish following the manufacturer's directions and let dry.
