Steps:

1. Use sandpaper to rough up the area around the damage so the patch will stick.

2. Apply the patch directly over the hole and press firmly against the wall (figure A). Make sure the metal in the center of the patch covers the hole.

3. Put some drywall mud in the mud bucket and spread over the patch, making sure to fill in all the mesh holes in the patch and cover the tape (figure B). Tapering the thickness of the mud into the wall will make sanding easier.

4. Once the mud has dried around the edges, dip fingers into water and smooth away any ridges in the patch. Be gentle and do not expose the mesh tape. Smooth the edges with a nylon kitchen scouring pad, then spray area with spray-on texture to blend it into the surrounding wall.

5. To prevent future damage, attach doorstops to the base of the door (figure C) and at the center hinge (figure D) to keep the doorknob from smacking into the wall again.
