Toolbox: Wall Dents

Help Around the House : Episode ARH-142 -- More Projects »
You know, a little ding in your wall doesn't have to send you into a state of distress. It's something you can fix with just a couple of inexpensive tools and a few minutes of your time. Now I make the distinction: ding, not hole. A ding is just a dent. A hole goes all the way through the wall.

What you want to do first is make sure the ding or the dent is clean and free of debris. Then purchase some vinyl spackling--vinyl because it doesn't shrink. Take a putty knife and get a good bunch of the spackling on your putty knife. Apply it directly to the ding or dent, and leave a little excess there that is higher than the surface. Allow it to dry for about 30 minutes or so.

Now after it's dry to the touch, come back and shave off the excess with the putty knife. Then match the texture. You can do that with a brush or a sponge or even a roller, depending on what type of texture you have there. Now once you've done that and it looks good to you, it will dry white. If you have to match a color, remember to prime it first; then match up your topcoat.

This technique will also work well for nail holes and other little dings. You can do it!
