Figure C
Author Glenwood Sherry demonstrates how to add layers of bronze paints and glazes to a wall then washes the surface with green patina to create a textured copper and bronze wall finish. This process is best applied to smaller areas such as above a fireplace, in a niche or on cabinets and other small furnishings.

Materials:

vinyl spackle
plastic spackle knife
small sea sponge
satin finish chocolate brown latex paint
copper and bronze metallic paint
light green paint
paintbrush
soft rag

Steps:

  1. Apply a very thin layer of vinyl spackle to the surface, working in six to eight inch sections at a time.
  2. Take a slightly damp wool sponge and "pull" it down over the vinyl spackle to create small ridges (figure A). Let dry for five to six hours.
  3. Apply a chocolate brown basecoat with a paintbrush and allow to dry for two hours.
  4. Take another slightly damp sponge and dip it into the bronze metallic paint. Wipe it on from top to bottom, in the same manner as the spackle (figure B) and allow to dry for two hours.
  5. Repeat the process with the copper metallic paint.
  6. To give it an aged, tarnished look, again, wipe on the light green paint with the sea sponge. Take a damp rag and wipe off the excess (figure C), depending on what kind of tarnished effect you would like.
