Kitty Bartholomew visits with Joe Fenzl, director of the Pacific School of Decorative Arts, to learn decorative techniques for walls, furniture and accessories, using tinted wall plaster and wax, shoe polish, glue, and varnish tinted with aniline dyes .
The first technique Fenzl demonstrates gives a rich, aged patina to walls. He uses three colors for the demonstration--a deep teal green, olive and taupe--but any number of colors can be used. The medium used is dry wall compound, to which universal tints and an acrylic gloss medium, which gives shine and durability, have been added . To achieve a depth of color, apply the darkest color first, working up to the lightest color.
- Begin with a lightly sanded coat of flat paint. Use 100 grit sandpaper and wipe any residue off the walls.
- Apply the compound with a wide putty knife, darkest color first. Working top to bottom and left to right, apply a thin layer of color with short, small strokes , working the edges together (figure A). The compound should be the texture of toothpaste . Keep a damp rag handy to wipe the blade clean.
- Let the walls dry and sand lightly with 400 grit paper to remove any bumps . Wipe clean with a soft rag.
- Apply the next coat of compound in the medium color in the same way. This layer can be smooth or textured. The first layer should be visible through the second coat (figure B).
- Let the walls dry, then sand lightly and wipe clean.
- Apply the lightest color in a very thin veil. Fenzl adds extra tint to this layer so it will be a bit thinner than previous layers. This layer will dry faster , so work quickly. Work with a very flat blade to get the thinnest coat of medium possible (figure C).
- Let the walls dry and lightly sand them.
- Using 0000 steel wool, apply a light coat of carnuba wax (figure D), using one side of the steel wool to apply the wax and the other to remove any excess. It won't be necessary to rub too hard, and the wax will dry quickly.
- Burnish the walls with a soft cloth to bring up rich shine (figure E).
