Wicker Painting on Walls

Room by Room : Episode RXR-1011 -- More Projects »
Materials:

two large and two small squeegees (cut these with scissors as desired for vertical and horizontal stripes)
paintbrush
roller rags or paper towels
painter's tape
paint
glaze

Steps:

  1. Apply a satin latex base coat in a soft yellow. Create a golden glaze by combining one part latex paint with three parts latex glaze.
  2. Tape-off panels in order to work with smaller areas.
  3. Work on one panel at a time. Cover the base-coated wall with glaze by cutting in around the trim and ceiling and roll on the rest as needed for even coverage.

  • Use the cut squeegee to create vertical lines by pulling it through the glaze from ceiling to floor in one motion (figure A). Use as smooth a stroke as possible and wipe the squeegee clean after each pass. Use a smaller squeegee for tight areas.
  • Switch to the squeegee cut to create the crosshatching design and pull it through each vertical line in short strokes (figure B). Work in a small area from one side to the other until the panel is complete. Clean the squeegee as necessary and move rather quickly so the glaze doesn't dry.
