Geometric molding shapes in the entryway divide the space and make it more intimate by creating warmth and texture without taking away from the expanse of the area.
The Good Life House has an abundance of walls, but what do you do with so much neutral space? Designer Malcolm Cooper shows how to make the spaces they create less intimidating. Here are some of his suggestions:

  • Cooper carried the wall treatment from the entryway across the upstairs hall and down the ceiling of the family room to visually bring the cathedral ceiling down . He included a subtle wicker-patterned wall covering that complements the wicker furnishings while providing a neutral background for other textures.
  • Vertical stripes break up spaces as well. In the living room Cooper used striped wallpaper borders placed vertically against subtly pinstriped wallpaper to "panel out" accent areas and tie in the traditional darker tones of the furnishings.
  • Reflection and repetition of design elements from room to room add personality and provides continuity. All the elements from the whole house come together in the dining room, the most formal room in the house.
  • Cooper made a bed canopy by nailing one-inch wood strips to the ceiling and stapling Velcro to them.
  • Iron, wood and rattan are used throughout, as are plaids fabrics.
