Host Cindy Piccoli shows how to give walls the look of real stone using grocery bags.
Materials:
brown paper grocery bags
paintbrush
spray paint (gray and black)
foam brush
decoupage glue
pencil
straightedge
latex wall paint (dark brown )
acrylic paint (gray)
small artist's brush
Steps:
- Paint wall with dark brown paint and allow to dry.
- Decide how large the stones will be and tear them from unprinted and seamed areas of paper bags using a straightedge as a guide. The amount needed is determined by the wall and stone size.
- Lightly draw horizontal pencil lines on the wall to keep the stones from being uneven.
- Crumple each into a ball, then lightly smooth out. Use spray paint and dust across each one with: gray, black, gray, black, and one final dusting of gray. This will give a nicely textured 3-D effect. Allow to dry.
- Working small three foot by three foot areas at a time, brush on decoupage glue , and then adhere each stone in place, tapping lightly with the brush so as not to flatten them completely. When adhered, cover each area with another coat of decoupage glue.
- Once the entire wall is complete, apply another coat of decoupage glue to the entire surface if desired.
Tips:
- Don't make the stones perfect. The straightedge will create rough edges, the way a natural stone would look.
- Use imagination with regard to colors. Add some red or green to the scheme if desired .
- Brown kraft paper can be used as an alternative to grocery bags.
