Video: Replacing door trim can completely change the look of a room.

Steps:
  1. Set a level to be sure side trim pieces are plumb. Mark along the set back (usually a 1/4-inch reveal along the inside of the trim) to use as a guide (figure A).

  • Hold base cap piece in place at the bottom and make a mark along the baseboard (figure B).

  • Remove this area with a chisel to avoid disturbing the whole baseboard (figure C).
  • Remove all of the remaining trim. Tip: Hold a wood block behind tools to avoid damage to walls when prying it loose.
  • Put base cap in place, drill pilot holes and nail to secure.

  • To determine the length of the sidepieces, put the rosette directly in the upper corner and mark along the bottom of it (figure D). Measure the distance from the mark to the top of the base cap and cut trim. Drill pilot holes every 16 inches or so and nail in place. Repeat attachment procedure for the rosette and header piece. Fill nails holes, prime and paint.

    Design Tidbit: Chair rails are commonly mounted 30 to 36 inches from the floor in rooms with eight-foot ceilings.
