Paneled walls turned a bland office into elegant study.
Materials:

tape measure
paint brushes
clean cloths
table saw
nail gun
staple gun
contractor glue
drill and large bit
reciprocal saw
pencil
level
stud finder
ladder
1/4-inch maple veneered panels
embossed oak molding
chair rail
English chestnut stain

Steps:

1. Measure the room and determine how many panels you need and their size. Cut panels down to appropriate size based on these dimensions. (Hint: Keeping all the panels the same width will give a much more finished appearance.)

2. Stain molding and chair rail. Begin at each end and apply a light coat with a brush (figure A) and then wipe it clean with a cloth to expose the grain. Repeat the process if you want a darker coat, but be sure to wipe it clean to prevent clumping.

3. If you have detailed molding take particular care to wipe off the stain so it does not pool in the creases.

4. Allow stain to dry.

5. Stain the panels using the same technique –– applying the stain then wiping it down until desired shade is reached.

6. Allow all pieces to dry.

7. Apply a coat of polyurethane and allow to dry.

8. Cut out holes in the panels for light switches and outlets.

9. Find all the studs in the walls and apply a layer of construction glue to the walls between the studs. Then affix each panel to the wall with a staple gun at each of the studs.

10. Add chair rail molding to the top of the panels using glue and a nail gun (figure B). Be sure that molding fits snugly before applying glue.

11. Cover the divide in the panels from top to bottom by attaching the molding using a nail gun.

12. Measure in six inches from each side of each panel to determine placement for the decorative interior molding and cut it down to appropriate size.

13. Place interior molding against panels in designated place, measure with a level and attach with a nail gun (figure C).
