Toolbox: Rustproofing

Help Around the House : Episode ARH-111 -- More Projects »
You know, the easy thing to do after wrapping up a project is to just put your tools aside without cleaning them. But a little TLC can go a long way towards preventing rust and helping you get the most life out of your tools. For example, a rusty blade on a cutting tool can be dangerous. The rust deteriorates the surface and makes it dull.

A fine steel wool pad dipped in mineral spirits is very effective for removing rust. The steel wool cleans and the mineral spirits lubricates the blade. Remember to always wear gloves and work in a well-ventilated area.

To clean off the excess thinner, you don't need any special cleaning rags. An old sock or T-shirt works just fine. To remove really stubborn rust, use a fine-grit sandpaper like a 150-grit or higher.

After everything is clean and dry, you're going to need a protective coating. I like to use paste floor wax. Just apply a very thin coat, let it dry, and then buff it out. And don't forget the handle. It's a good idea to give your tools this special treatment every six months or so.

Even though the tool may say it's rustproof, it's probably a good idea go ahead and take the time to clean them anyway. And remember to always store your tools in a cool, dry place away from moisture.
