Toolbox: Rubbing Powders

Help Around the House : Episode ARH-127 -- More Projects »
If you want to remove water stains from your dining room table or minor scratches or blemishes, but you really don't want to refinish the entire piece, a little rubbing powder may be exactly what you need. And you know what? It'll cost you less than two dollars.

You use pumice rubbing powder for that satin finish, and you use rottenstone rubbing powder to maintain that high gloss.

Here's the way I like to use this rubbing powder. Just sprinkle a little bit on the watermark or stain, directly on it. And then I'll take a very soft cloth--sort of a felt-type cloth--and dip it in some mineral oil. Now you just come right on top of it and just rub it. Get a little more oil; rub a little more. Keep working it with the grain, because if you go in a circular motion, you're gonna leave some swirl marks. In just a matter of a few seconds, the watermark is going to completely disappear. A little elbow grease and some magic powder and the stain disappears!
