The most basic of toolboxes should at least include a 12-ounce hammer, tape measure, pliers, putty knife, a six-inch crescent wrench, Japanese pull saw and a level.
Homeowners and renters alike should have a few basic tools around for emergency repairs or small projects. Professional handyman Dan Miller discusses his picks for building a basic tool kit.

Bare-Bones Set

These are the most basic tools needed to accomplish many simple tasks around the house such as hanging a picture, tightening a drawer and cabinet handles, replacing switch and outlet plates and even installing a faucet or toilet.

Your set should include the following: safety glasses, a 12-ounce hammer, pencil, Phillips-head and standard screwdrivers, measuring tape, six-inch utility knife--traditional and snap off--pliers, a six-inch crescent wrench, and an assortment of nails, screws, wire, molly bolts, wall anchors and fasteners.

Purchase a toolbox larger than you need at this time, in case you want to upgrade someday to a larger tool set.

Toolbox Upgrade

If you're a little more serious about the projects you want to tackle, you might want to upgrade your toolbox. These extra tools will help you accomplish things such as installing window treatments, minor wallboard repair, minor millwork installation and furniture repair.
