A damaged screw can sometimes be repaired by using a thread chaser. This inexpensive tool is basically a specialized file. Begin by counting the number of threads-per-inch on your screw. Hold the screw with a hand clamp to give you a better grip and then look for the matching thread count number on the outside of the file. Match up the threads with the file and then just gently work the thread chaser back and forth across the threads. It will hang up in damaged areas. Go completely around the screw a few times then see if it works. If you don't have a thread chaser you may be able to make the repair using a small triangular file.
