Figure A

  • This is a unique Japanese saw that is more than 100 years old and is used for making rough cuts (figure A). It is flexible and will fit in tight spaces. Use it for cutting dowels by holding the saw along the edge of the wood.

Figure B
  • The common saw (figure B) is most often used for cutting tree branches.

  • To remove rust from saws, rub with sandpaper that has been lightly soaked in oil.

    Figure D
  • A hacksaw (figure C) is most often used for cutting PVC pipes and metal.

  • For a fine cut, choose a saw blade with more teeth (figure D). The labels on blades will often explain their uses.

  • Always wear safety gloves and glasses when using a saw of any kind.

  • Prevent wobbling when sawing by always pulling back the saw when starting. It will be much easier than pushing forward. Always let the saw do the work. Press lightly.

  • Make sure the wood is solid. Saw using a downward motion for better leverage.

    Figure F
  • When cutting PVC pipe with a hacksaw, place the pipe in a vice (figure E) because it is round and hard to keep steady. The fine teeth of a hacksaw make it appropriate for a job such as this.

  • Before using a power hand saw, look at the features. The knob on the front of the saw will enable the blade to tilt (figure F). The knob on the side adjusts the depth of the blade. There should also be a safety button that must be pressed in order for the blade to work.

  • Always make sure the power saw is going at full speed before it hits the wood.
