The most popular nails are common, box and finish. These can be used for a wide range of projects.
Common: The most sturdy and used for heavy-duty construction like framing a house.

Box: These have the same shape as common nails but with a thinner shank . These were originally used in the construction of cigar boxes, so they are best for lightweight projects.

Finish: This type doesn't have a head and are usually used for trim and molding when it's desirable to hide the nail hole. After driving it in almost flush , countersink the nail and spackle the hole.

Nail Sizing Tips:

  • Then term "penny" is commonly understood to have meant the amount of nails that could be purchased for a penny.
  • A nail should be about two times longer than the thickness of what it is going through.
  • A 4d nail is 1-1/2 inches long, 6d is two inches long and an 8d is 2-1/2 inches in length. The longer the nail, the higher the number.
