  • When working on a ladder, keep the step from rubbing against your leg by rolling up a towel and securing it to the ladder with duct tape (figure A).

  • Driving smaller nails into hardwood may result in the nail bending or wood splitting. To prevent this, predrill the holes with a nail. Simply grind down or remove the nail head (figure B) and place into the drill. By predrilling with a nail and not a screw they will drive into the holes easier and will not lose any holding strength. Also try flattening the nail tip. A flattened nail tip is less likely to split wood than a sharp nail tip.

  • Keep your shop's trash bag in place by cutting a slit lengthwise down a hose, then placing the hose over the trash bag and trash can (figure C).

  • Computer-disc storage boxes work great for storing sanding discs in your shop.

  • Use a magnetic kitchen knife holder to hold small metal tools such as chisels, files or screwdrivers (figure D) This works great for holding tools on the side of your ladder or workbench.

  • If a veneer you are working with becomes warped or dry, simply spray it with a plant mister (figure E), then weight it down to hold its shape (figure F).
