Home repair expert Henry Harrison helps a homeowner whose front door is too narrow to properly fit a peephole. He shows her a neat way to add thickness to the door by mounting a decorative plaque on the interior surface of the door and an apartment number on the outside. On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison gives this job a two. Tools:
Decorative wooden plaque
House number(s)
Workbench
Pocketknife (or utility knife)
Power drill
Spade bit
Clamps
Safety glasses
5-in-1 painters tool
Steps:1. Cut the paint seams around the existing peephole with a utility knife or pocketknife (figure A).
2. Unscrew and remove the peephole (figure B).
3. Cut a hole in the wooden plaque the same diameter as the peephole using a power drill with a spade bit (figure C). 4. Cut another hole in the center of the plastic number that will go on the front of the door (figure D).
5. Mount the number on the front of the door and insert the outward-facing section of the peephole. Mount the wooden plaque and eyepiece on the inside of the door (figure E). 6. Screw both peephole pieces together, using the painters tool to tighten. If there is any extra space, use brass washers to fill the gap.
