To check for lead or the presence of lead in your home, you can pick up a test kit, which includes a little swab, for about 6 bucks at your local hardware store or home center. It works pretty easy. All you have to do is crush it by squeezing on it on both ends. Hear that break? Then let the solution come down to the tip.

You rub the surface that you want to check for lead. Now, if it turns red, then there is definitely the presence of lead.

There are special kits like this that are available to test your water, but getting accurate results can take a considerable amount of time. You always want to make sure that you follow the manufacturer's instructions thoroughly. If the results are positive, then you can call the national lead information center at 800-424-LEAD (5323) for help.
